UK Proxy Server preview
September 21st, 2009Author: EmilHomesickness can hit us all when we’re travelling or living abroad. Instead of trying to change my tastes though, I always have a jar of marmite and a few British TV shows to hand.
I prefer the BBC’s and ITV’s live-channel streaming service, as well as on-demand services, to downloading TV shows via Bittorrent (which can be a slow process if you’re in a hotel). This means BBC One and ITV live can be watched live on a computer, as long as it has a British IP address.
A proxy server gives you such an address even if you’re sat in outer-Mongolia, which means I can get my weekly dose of Match of the Day, Top Gear and England international football games anywhere in the world.
Setting up a proxy server is easy to do but, as many of these services, you have to change browser depending on what you want to view. BBC’s streaming and iPlayer services only work in Internet Explorer, while ITV’s only seemed to work in Firefox. There’s also an annoying bug in Internet Explorer 8 where it won’t remember your proxy password (even if you follow website guides to reduce IE’s logon security settings), so be prepared to enter it at least three times before you can reliably watch a show.
So, Scothosts sells a proxy for £9.99 per month via its UK Proxy Server website. This is, misleadingly, a Paypal subscription, so 60 quid will roll out of your account if you forget about it for half a year, say.
From Denmark with an 80Mbit/sec fiber connection, I downloaded a file at above 2Mbytes/sec from a private server in the UK without the Scothosts proxy enabled.. With the proxy enabled, this speed plummeted to 148Kbytes/sec. These speeds were typical of my experience, night and day.
Streaming HD content from BBC iPlayer – which goes above this bandwidth – was no problem though, suggesting Scothosts throttles speeds depending on usage.
I also got an error message a couple of times saying only 5 IP address are allowed. This happened when I accessed more than one website, which either brought browsing to a crawl or failed to load webpages at all.
I decided to cancel the service on the first day of my second month and politely asked for a refund, since I didn’t need it for a second month. However, Scothosts ignored my request, but did help me to cancel the rolling subscription. I’m not hugely bothered about paying for another month (because I’ll use the service), but I’m fairly sure Scothosts is breaking the Distant Selling Regulations – in particular the 7-day cooling off period required for all goods and services bought online.
Update: 16/10/2009
Scothosts got in touch to challenge my article (read its response in the comments section). I have therefore written a follow up article to this post.

Dear Emil,
We were recently made aware of your review of our services at http://www.emillarsen.com/?p=34 and naturally we were quite concerned that you feel we have let you do so badly and found it strange that you hadn’t contacted us directly through any means to seek clarification on some of your points.
If you’d kindly allow me to address some of the points, I hope you will consider a retraction on some of the issues raised in your review as it is my opinion they do portray the experience of most customers nor our dedication to high quality customer service?
POINT 1:
You say…
“So, Scothosts sells a proxy for £9.99 per month via its UK Proxy Server website. This is, misleadingly, a Paypal subscription, so 60 quid will roll out of your account if you forget about it for half a year, say.”
Our response…
I just checked one of our product pages at http://www.ukproxyserver.co.uk/products/proxy-solutions/uk-proxy-server/uk-proxy-shared-ip-monthly as obviously we are keen to be sure nobody is being misled.
The first line of standard text, under the title = “Purchase monthly reoccurring access to the Scothosts powered UK Proxy Server.”
Final line of bold text, above the £9.99 price = “Monthly Reoccurring (automatic credit card charge every month)”
This is in addition to the knowledgebase item at http://helpdesk.scothosts.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=114 and the main proxy page at http://www.ukproxyserver.co.uk/proxy-solutions which offers the question and answer, per the link: “If I subscribe how easy is it to cancel if no longer required?” The cancellation point is also linked directly from our main “Contact Us” page at http://www.ukproxyserver.co.uk/info/contact-us.
Fortunately for us nobody else has raised this as a concern and given many users subscribe by Paypal they also have a direct means to can from within their Paypal account as you did yourself once we confirmed for you.
POINT 2:
You say…
“From Denmark with an 80Mbit/sec fiber connection, I downloaded a file at above 2Mbytes/sec from a private server in the UK without the Scothosts proxy enabled.. With the proxy enabled, this speed plummeted to 148Kbytes/sec. These speeds were typical of my experience, night and day.
Streaming HD content from BBC iPlayer – which goes above this bandwidth – was no problem though, suggesting Scothosts throttle speeds depending on usage.”
Our response…
The problems that you experienced were most likely due to the number of hops from your PC > ISP > Routing Servers > Our Proxy Server and then back to you again.
We do not limit bandwidth or throttle your connection in anyway. We also offer a knowledgebase article on this subject at http://helpdesk.scothosts.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=18&nav=0,3
We are also happy to run ping traces from our range of proxy servers to your ISP and discover which of our IP’s will offer the best route to you. We regularly change customer IP’s if they have speed issues and generally these problems are easily overcome, even though they are not caused by us directly. In Denmark we have many customers achieving speeds of 2mb through our proxy and up to 15mb through our VPN solution, which we allow proxy customers to upgrade if they wish as no extra cost.
POINT 3:
You say…
“I also got an error message a couple of times saying only 5 IP address are allowed. This happened when I accessed more than one website, which either brought browsing to a crawl or failed to load webpages at all.”
Our response…
“Each proxy account is limited to a maximum of 5 connections at any one time. Some websites use multiple connections in order to display correctly. Also if you added the Proxy to Internet Explorer you PC will be using the proxy for things like Outlook, Skype, MSN etc.
If customers receive an error saying all your connections then we will gladly increase the limit, although this is a very rare request.
Alternatively we switch customers free of charge to our VPN connection type which has no limitations on the number of connections.”
POINT 4:
You say…
“I’m fairly sure Scothosts is breaking the Distant Selling Regulations – in particular the 7-day cooling off period required for all goods and services bought online.”
Our response…
We abide by all aspects of the distance selling regulations and any customer that contacts us within the specified time after placing their original order will be refunded in full, no question. This is clearly different when the payment is on a subscription basis, hence the reason we include “Recurring Oversight” in our refund policy at http://www.ukproxyserver.co.uk/info/refund-policy.
As I say we would be grateful if you would consider a retraction/edit on your review and we would also be happy to offer you a further free trial on either proxy or VPN so you can clarify my points regarding speed are honest and sincere.
If you would like to discuss this further with us then please contact me or our General Manager, Greg Murphy on +44 131 208 4334 or by reply to this ticket.
Kind Regards,
Edward Gibbs
